I need someone (or NGO etc) that is interested in providing independent transportation for mobility impaired people in poor and developing countrys to assist in implementing my project. I have already developed the prototype to provide this opportunity. I am paraplegic and I have travel a lot in developing regions of the world--I understand the problems intimately. The device I have created is inexpensive, practical, and innovative. It could be readily constructed and repaired within target countries (example Cambodia).
Academic, Professional, Skills
I am a scientist and professor with a doctorate in Neuroscience. I have been a medical school faculty member for 20 years. My interest in joining this site is not directly related to my formal education. I am also paraplegic for 32 years of my life and I understand the problems faced by people with mobility impairments very well.
I have travel a lot in "third world" or "developing countries". The problems that face people with disability in these regions are desperate and enormous. Poverty is the major culprit. However these people often have no method to go to work or for training due to the complete lack of affordable or accessible transportation. With that in mind I have devised a personal transport device for people who use wheelchairs. It is inexpensive and could be constructed and distributed within the target countries. Widespread distribution of this device could alleviate a large amount of poverty and social isolation for most disabled people in poor countries.
