Innovations in brick making – Improving the quality of walls by making better bricks
Abstract
An international Science and Technology company with headquarters in the US (annual revenue in excess of US $20 billion) is seeking innovative approaches and technologies to improve the quality of walls in India by making better bricks.

Traditionally, mud (clay) bricks have been the material of choice for the construction industry.  However cracks and seepage due to poor quality of raw material used are common occurrences, especially in lower income homes. There are also wide disparities in the quality of bricks across geographies due to differences in soil and climate.

Need Description
Of interest are traditional and non-traditional innovations for improving the quality of walls in India.

Traditional brick making innovations
• Substances that can be added to make any kind of soil suitable for good quality bricks. Currently, varying percentages of clay and other components render many kinds of soils useless for brick making
• Process Interventions to lower the turnaround time in brick making
• Energy efficiencies to lower the consumption of fuel in brick making
• Less polluting techniques

Cost Saving – Innovation should result in at least 20% cost reduction for brick kiln owners

Disruptive brick replacement innovations
• Disruptive technologies/designs that can replace traditional clay bricks

It would also be advantageous if thermal and sound insulation could be improved as a result of the innovation.
Outcome
The potential outcome may include a joint development, licensing or technology buy back agreement.
